Dan and Melissa Williams, co-founders of Daniel Barden Mudfest – an annual muddy obstacle course race event in Deansboro – presented this year’s event proceeds of $25,000 in a check to Sandy Hook Promise on July 26.
This donation was particularly fitting given the meaning behind Mudfest and its origins. A decade ago, the Williams organized the event as a way of honoring the memory of Daniel Barden, one of the first-grade children killed in the Sandy Hook, Conn. mass shooting in December 2012. Daniel was a kind and gentle child who touched the hearts of everyone he met.
Sandy Hook Promise is a national nonprofit organization founded and led by several family members whose loved ones were killed at Sandy Hook Elementary School on December 14, 2012. By empowering youth to “know the signs” and uniting all people who value the protection of children, their goal is to take meaningful actions in schools, homes, and communities to prevent gun violence and stop the tragic loss of life.
In the years since Mudfest’s inception, the organization has made over $440,000 collectively in charitable contributions to Sandy Hook Promise and other local nonprofits.
